About me

Dr. B. Shoshana Zha is a pulmonologist who cares for adults with lung disorders. She specializes in bronchiectasis (a condition involving damage to lung airways) and lung infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), organisms found in dust, soil and water. She co-directs a clinic dedicated to NTM infections, cares for patients in intensive care, and provides general pulmonary care at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Zha's research focuses on understanding how the immune system responds to mycobacterial infections (which can cause such diseases as tuberculosis and leprosy). Outside of the laboratory, she also studies ways to optimize treatments for bronchiectasis and NTM infections.

Zha earned her medical degree and a doctorate in microbiology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at UCSF.

Even at the end of a long work day Dr. Zha is attentive, concerned and thoughtful in responding to my questions. She explains issues in a manner that is understandable but not condescending.

Doctor's expertise and knowledge was much appreciated in her ability to listen carefully, answer questions and provide a comprehensive plan for treatment going forward. She seems to care deeply for her patients and takes the time to make sure all is understood. I was very impressed with her thoroughness
