Our pulmonology services
UCSF Health's pulmonologists treat a wide variety of lung conditions. Our specialized pulmonary medicine clinics provide advanced diagnostic procedures, giving us precise results so we can tailor effective treatment plans. Teams from different specialties work together to provide prompt, seamless, coordinated care.
Diagnostic pulmonary services
We provide screening and diagnostic tests for lung conditions such as lung cancer, sarcoidosis and ILD. We perform some tests in the office, while others require light sedation or anesthesia in a surgery center or operating room.
Specialty lung care
Our Bay Area lung clinics provide targeted care for patients navigating pulmonary conditions, such as:
-
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema
-
Non-CF bronchiectasis
-
Non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease
-
Long-term complications of COVID-19
-
Sarcoidosis
-
End-stage lung disease requiring lung transplant
-
Occupational respiratory diseases
-
Pneumonia
-
Pulmonary embolism
-
Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea
For patients with severe emphysema and COPD or alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (a genetic disease that increases the risk of developing emphysema), we're one of the few programs to offer treatments such as lung transplant and endobronchial valves.
We also offer intensive, multi-specialty care for patients dealing with lung or other long-term issues after a COVID-19 infection. This care is available at our Pulmonology Parnassus location.
Our team leads innovative research to help better understand and treat various pulmonary conditions. You may have the opportunity to join a promising clinical trial, accessing therapies that are not widely available.
Advanced pulmonary procedures
Our interventional pulmonologists are experts in minimally invasive lung procedures, typically leading to fewer complications and a quicker recovery compared with standard treatment approaches.
We offer same-day, in-office procedures such as thoracentesis, which removes excess fluid from the lungs. Our experts also use robot-assisted bronchoscopy, giving us additional precision when performing biopsies on lung nodules.
