Dr. Doris Wang is a neurosurgeon who specializes in surgery for patients with movement disorders, such as essential tremor, Parkinson's disease and dystonia, a condition in which involuntarily contracting muscles cause abnormal movements.

Wang uses deep brain stimulation devices – implantable devices that can send electric signals to specific areas of the brain – in her research to better understand the dynamics of neural networks that develop as humans learn motor skills. Her goal is to develop targeted treatments that restore motor skill learning in patients with brain diseases and injuries.

Wang earned her doctorate in neuroscience and her medical degree at UCSF, where she also completed a residency in neurosurgery. During her residency, she developed an interest in functional neurosurgery, which utilizes a variety of techniques to restore or improve brain function. Also at UCSF, she completed a fellowship in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, which involves using advanced imaging techniques such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to guide neurosurgical procedures.

A member of the UCSF community since 2004, Wang shares the institution's values and commitment to advancing patient care while deepening scientific understanding of neurological disorders. She belongs to the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery.

This was an extremely good video interview, and Dr. Wang is excellent in conducting the interview and providing all the information. IThis was an extremely good video interview and Dr. Wang is excellent in conducting the interview and providing all the information. I realize scheduling takes time and that is my chief concern which she is facilitating and scheduling department has been very helpful in referring me to the proper people in her office for what will be a fairly complicated trip to UCSF. So far, I'm very satisfied with this and I am awaiting further information about scheduling. Dr. Wang gave me very realistic dates about screening and the ultimate procedure.

Both doctor and assistant doctor were very pleasant, very helpful and gave me all the time I needed. A later realized that I wished there had been more discussion about the Care after, but they did give me some discussion about that. Perhaps I should have asked more questions, but I thought of them later.

Although this is a subjective observation, I *felt* as if the Dr was in a hurry to get to the next patient. She clearly was *not* at all rude or inconsiderate in any way, but there were a few times where I felt as if I was imposing on the allotted time by asking questions. This caused me to become somewhat 'flustered.' I again want to emphasize that she was being totally professional and thorough in addressing my questions and concerns--I just didn't have time to take in and absorb the entire discussion and am sorry I don't have a transcript to review 'at my own pace.'

Care provider determined that I did not have essential tremors

    My work

Treatment makes big difference for essential tremor

Dr. Wang helps patients with this life-limiting movement disorder using a novel non-invasive procedure called high-intensity focused ultrasound that calms their symptoms.
