Jaehoon Shin, MD, PhD

Dr. Jaehoon Shin is an interventional radiologist, a specialist in using imaging techniques to guide the performance of minimally invasive procedures. His expertise includes using computed tomography (CT), X-ray fluoroscopy (X-rays performed in real time) and ultrasound to treat cancerous and benign tumors. He also treats venous occlusion (a narrowed or blocked vein) and venous insufficiency (poor blood flow between the legs and heart). He works collaboratively with other types of specialists to ensure that his patients receive the best possible care.

Shin conducts research to improve scientific understanding of disease and to optimize minimally invasive approaches to treating disease. He pioneered a new type of single-cell RNA sequencing (an advanced genetic sequencing technology) that can provide insight into the development of cancer and conditions that affect veins. He is also working on new imaging methods for CAR T-cells (immune cells genetically engineered to treat cancer) as well as T-cell therapies to target various cancers that will have fewer side effects than treatments currently in use.

Shin earned his medical degree from Seoul National University in South Korea and his doctorate in cellular and molecular medicine from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. At UCSF, he completed a residency in diagnostic radiology and a fellowship in interventional radiology.
