About me
Dr. Jang Won "Jon" Yoon is a neurosurgeon and director of the minimally invasive spine surgery program. He has dedicated his career to finding the best way to treat each spinal condition by using the most cutting-edge techniques and technology. He believes in a highly personalized approach to spine surgery that takes into account the uniqueness of each patient's condition and factors that may affect the outcomes of treatment. In addition, he always assesses whether conservative, non-surgical treatments are possible before recommending surgery. He has a special interest in using ultra-minimally invasive techniques, when possible, for complex procedures such as tumor removal and spinal deformity corrections.
Yoon is passionate about continuous innovation and developing new ways to improve spine surgery. In research, his primary interests lie in designing innovative surgical tools and software for use in the clinic. He focuses especially on applying new AI-driven algorithms to predict outcomes after spine surgery using data such as smartphone-tracked motion patterns. He currently leads a team of data scientists and spine surgeons with the goal of transforming how surgical outcomes are assessed. They seek to build tools that can help patients, surgeons and researchers make more-informed decisions, ultimately improving recovery and long-term quality of life.
Yoon earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he also earned a master of science degree in biophysics. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at the Mayo Clinic, followed by a fellowship in complex spine surgery at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.
Yoon is a proud father of two young boys who bring joy, chaos and perspective to his life. Being a dad has profoundly shaped the way he cares for patients, making him more patient, empathetic and attuned to the little things that matter. He's also the son of immigrants who came to the U.S. with hope, grit and a deep belief in education. That background fuels his commitment to hard work, humility and treating every patient like family.
Outside the hospital, you can usually find Yoon chasing his kids around the park, doing an early-morning CrossFit workout to get ready for the day or grabbing a coffee at a local cafe. Staying active and grounded outside of work helps him bring his best self to the operating room.
