About me

Dr. John Cello is an expert in gastrointestinal disorders and director of the UCSF Esophageal Motility Center. He cares for patients with gastrointestinal disorders at both UCSF and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Cello's research addresses new treatments for gastrointestinal conditions, including morbid obesity.

Cello earned his medical degree from Harvard University with high honors. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in gastroenterology at UCSF.

Cello has received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Educator Award from the American Gastroenterological Association and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and a member of the American College of Physicians, California Academy of Medicine, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Western Society for Clinical Investigation.
