About me

Dr. Maria Raven is an emergency care doctor who serves as UCSF's chief of emergency medicine. She serves as a professor of emergency medicine as well as the vice chair of the department of emergency medicine at UCSF Medical Center.

Raven studies how to improve care delivery for patients with complex medical and social needs. Her research involves implementing and evaluating programs for frequent users of the health care system, many of whom are experiencing homelessness, have mental health and substance use disorders, and have a high level of social needs. She focuses on using the emergency department as a point of intervention for vulnerable populations and also on improving health and social care through collaborative data integration with organizations such as the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing.

Raven earned her medical degree and a master of public health degree at Oregon Health & Science University. She completed a residency in emergency medicine and a clinical research fellowship at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Raven is the associate director of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, and an affiliate faculty member at the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies. She is a fellow of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. She has received UCSF's Irene Perstein Award as well as two honors from the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine, the Mid-Career Faculty Award and Outstanding Research Publication of the Year Award.
