Dr. Matthew Gubens is a thoracic oncologist who cares for patients with lung cancer. He specializes particularly in treating non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, thymoma and thymic carcinoma, and mesothelioma.

In his research, Gubens studies new treatment strategies for lung cancer and other malignancies of the chest area.

Gubens earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at UCSF and a fellowship in medical oncology at Stanford. He also earned a master's degree in health policy and management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Gubens is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer and International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group.

    Dr Gubens is awesome and responsive in all ways I could want. He is responsive to exploring my thoughts. He has great experience and effectively leads my whole care team, which brings tremendous expertise to my health issue. He also is well versed with current findings around the world and is very well connected. He takes seriously my perspective so I feel we work as a team.

    Dr Gubens was very pleasant and professional and showed a genuine interest in my current situation with other health issues, which were unrelated to my treatment with him.     I was hospitalized and found it difficult to get doctor's input although I messaged through MyChart and nurse responded. There was a delay in having Dr Gubens or his team weigh in on important decision about stopping my targeted therapy drug or not.

    Dr Gubens is one of these rare doctors who is well informed and competent, while at the same time, who explains things clearly, is truly compassionate without being intrusive, has a holistic approach to the patient and takes time to explain situations clearly and calmly.
