Dr. Monika Sarkar is a transplant hepatologist, a specialist who cares for patients before and after a liver transplant. She runs the Women’s Liver Clinic, treating patients who have liver disease or who have had a liver transplant and need care related to contraception or pregnancy. She also specializes in caring for young women who are at risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, including those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

In both patient care and research, Sarkar's interests are at the intersection of women's health and liver disease, including liver disease in pregnancy, reproductive health in transplant recipients and the effects of reproductive aging on disease progression. She has funding from the National Institutes of Health to study the role of sex hormones in the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in women.

Sarkar completed her medical degree at UCSF, followed by a residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She then completed fellowships in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology at UCSF, as well as a master of advanced study degree in clinical research.

Sarkar supervises the training of UCSF medical residents as well as physicians completing fellowships in gastroenterology or liver transplant medicine.

Dr Sarkar and her fellow were both exceptional in their explanations of the issues to a layperson and their kindness.

I spent less than 5 minutes with Dr Sarkar - most of the time was answering history questions with her associate. We didn't talk about the history or future looking care -

Great job on explaining the results of my labs in an easy to digest way, and also all of the recommendations. I wasnt told I needed to fast before one of my labs, so now I have to go back a second time which is inconvenient.
