About me

Dr. Patrick Avila is a gastroenterologist who cares for patients with complex digestive system conditions, including disorders involving the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts. He specializes in endoscopic treatments (minimally invasive procedures using an endoscope, a flexible, thin tube that conveys a tiny camera and light), with expertise in colonoscopy; endoscopy of the pancreas, bile duct and upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract; endoscopic ultrasound (for both diagnosing and treating conditions); and complex endoscopic mucosal resection (a technique for removing abnormalities in the GI tract lining).

Avila's research interests include health policy, health care innovation, health care disparities, improving colon cancer prevention, and diversity and inclusion in medicine. He is passionate about eliminating disparities so that comprehensive health care is available to all.

Avila earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by fellowships in gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at UCSF.

Avila is a member of several professional associations, including the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
