About me

Dr. Rachel J. Bystritsky is an infectious disease specialist who focuses on serious bacterial and fungal infections as well as complex infections involving bones and joints or surgically implanted hardware. She provides patient consultations in both hospital and clinic settings. She serves as medical director of the UCSF Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) Program, which oversees IV antibiotics for patients receiving care at home or a skilled nursing facility.

Bystritsky is interested in health care quality improvement and medical education. She also has an interest in antimicrobial stewardship, a term for efforts to optimize the use of antibiotics – and other agents that work against disease-causing organisms – in ways that improve outcomes for patients and combat the development of drug resistance.

Bystritsky earned her medical degree at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed a residency in internal medicine at New York – Presbyterian Hospital, serving as chief resident. She completed her fellowship in infectious diseases at UCSF.
