Dr. Robert Kiningham is a primary care sports medicine doctor and family physician with over 34 years of experience providing comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages. He also specializes in sports medicine and a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and sports-related injuries. He has extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels, from high school and college teams to Olympic athletes.

Kiningham's research has examined the injury prevention and weight management of wrestlers. He is known locally and nationally as also been a leader in family medicine and sports medicine education and curriculum development.

Kiningham received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed a residency in family medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. He then completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Michigan. He also holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of California, Davis. He served as head team physician for Eastern Michigan University and team physician for the University of Michigan wrestling team, Club Wolverine Swimming and multiple high school programs across Michigan. He was the medical director for the Michigan High School Athletic Association individual and team wrestling championships for 25 years and the NCAA Division 1 collegiate wrestling championships in 2007 and 2022. He also served as associate director for scholarly activities for the University of Michigan’s sports medicine fellowship, where he previously directed the program for nearly two decades.

Kiningham is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and American Academy of Family Physicians and was awarded the Founders Award from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine in recognition of his national leadership in the field. He serves as an editorial reviewer for multiple family medicine and sports medicine journals and writes a bimonthly column on sports medicine research.
