About me

Dr. Sharon Shaw is an optometrist who provides comprehensive eye exams to patients of all ages. Her expertise includes ocular disease, eye infections and eye inflammation. She has special interests in glaucoma and retinal disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy (a complication of diabetes) and macular degeneration (an incurable disease that causes vision loss).

Shaw also cares for patients at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and serves as an image reader for the Digital Angiography Reading Center, where she interprets images of the eye for industry-sponsored studies.

Shaw earned her doctor of optometry degree at the University of California, Berkeley. She completed an optometry residency at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she gained specialty training in primary eye care for geriatric patients, vision care for the visually impaired, and specialty contact lens fitting after surgery and for keratoconus (a progressive eye disease that distorts vision.

A fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Shaw has served as an examiner and vice chair for the admittance committee. She also has worked in a private ophthalmology and optometry practice and as a research associate at the LuEsther T. Mertz Retinal Research Center at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.

In addition to raising two children, Shaw devotes time to travel; she loves exploring new cultures and cuisines. She also enjoys activities that take her across land, through the air and under the sea, including skiing, horseback riding, paragliding, swimming and scuba diving.
