General neurology, also called comprehensive neurology, helps people with symptoms that need careful neurologic evaluation. A general neurology program can be a helpful place to begin when symptoms are new, worsening or hard to explain. We evaluate your symptoms thoroughly, and if we determine that another type of care better fits your needs, we connect you with the right team for answers and treatment.

• Difficulty speaking or swallowing
• Difficulty with balance or walking
• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Memory or thinking issues
• Numbness or tingling
• Sleep-related concerns
• Tremors
• Weakness

What to expect from your evaluation

Your first visit usually happens in person. Your neurologist completes a detailed exam and talks with you about your symptoms, health history and concerns.

If needed, your care plan may include advanced testing, such as:

• Electroencephalogram (EEG)
• Electromyography and nerve conduction studies
• Lab studies, such as bloodwork or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis
• CT or MRI

Care that brings the right people together

In some cases, you may need input from other providers with focused expertise. Your neurologist may coordinate care with specialists in:

• Neurology subspecialty care. This may include epilepsy, headache, movement disorders, sleep medicine and neuromuscular disease.
• Inflammatory or infectious conditions. Neuroinfectious disease and neuroinflammatory disease specialists can help evaluate these concerns.
• Stroke and blood vessel conditions. Neurovascular and stroke specialists help when symptoms may involve blood flow to the brain or spine.
• Surgical and procedural care. Neurosurgery, pain medicine and radiology specialists help when procedures or surgery may support your care.
• Vision, hearing and swallowing concerns. Ophthalmology and otolaryngology specialists help evaluate symptoms in these areas.
• Mental health and quality of life. Psychiatry and palliative care teams help support coping, symptoms and care goals.

We also work closely with your referring provider. This connected approach helps us build a plan that fits your symptoms, diagnosis and goals.

Support for ongoing care

Your care may include medications, rehabilitation therapies or procedures when appropriate. We also help you consider everyday habits that support brain health, including movement, sleep, emotional well-being and social connection.

Our nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other team members help with follow-up care. They can help arrange testing, answer messages and address concerns between visits.
