Our approach to gynecologic dysplasia care
UCSF Health has been providing comprehensive gynecologic dysplasia care for more than 50 years. We evaluate and treat all types of gynecologic dysplasia — a precancerous condition where abnormal cells grow in the cervix, vagina or vulva. People throughout the Bay Area and California turn to us for a depth of expertise they can't find elsewhere.
Gynecologic dysplasia diagnosis and treatment
Most cases of gynecologic dysplasia are caused by HPV, a common group of viruses that spread through close contact, including sexual activity. If left untreated, dysplasia can develop into cancer.
If you receive abnormal results from a cervical cancer screening test (Pap test or HPV test), our team can help you make an informed decision about your next steps. We offer diagnostic tests for cervical dysplasia, including colposcopy (a magnified view of the cervix) and cone biopsy. If you need treatment, we provide surgical options, including loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP).
We are also one of only a few programs to offer nonsurgical alternatives — such as cryotherapy and laser treatment — for people of childbearing age. These treatments have been associated with fewer complications in future pregnancies. We also provide expert care for vulvar dysplasia, including laser treatments and topical medications.
