Neck mass evaluation and diagnosis
Our expert head and neck surgical oncologists provide expedited evaluations and diagnoses for abnormal lumps or swelling in the neck. We can often offer same-day appointments for referred patients and provide diagnostic procedures in our office for added speed and convenience. Our goal is to get you the answers and care you need as quickly as possible.
Neck masses may be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant). They can have several causes, ranging from an infected salivary gland to a thyroid cyst or tumor. Our specialists are experts in the neck's complex anatomy and the many possible causes of neck lumps or swelling.
Diagnostic tests for neck masses
Your comprehensive evaluation may include:
-
Ultrasound. This noninvasive test uses sound waves to produce images of structures deep within your neck. We offer in-office ultrasounds, so you don't have to schedule a separate appointment elsewhere.
-
Laryngoscopy. We pass a thin, flexible tube with lights and a camera down your throat to examine your larynx (voice box) and upper airway. You're awake for the procedure, but we numb your throat so you don't feel pain.
-
Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. Our cytopathology team uses a thin needle to take a sample of tissue from the neck mass, then examines it under a microscope to look for signs of cancer. We can often perform an FNA biopsy on the same day as your initial evaluation.
-
CT and MRI scans. If we need more detailed imaging, we may order one or both of these imaging tests.
If you have a neck mass that requires treatment, we work closely with you and your doctor to ensure you get the care you need.
