Garrett Roll, MD

Transplant surgeon

Dr. Garrett Roll is a transplant surgeon specializing in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation. He also performs general surgery in patients with end-stage liver and kidney disease, including patients with liver cancer.

Roll received his medical degree from the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He then completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in abdominal transplant surgery at UCSF.

After completing his fellowship, Roll was a senior international fellow in liver transplant and retrieval at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England, home to the busiest liver surgery unit in Europe. During his time in England, he gained unique experience in normothermic machine liver perfusion (NMLP), a method of preserving livers during transportion for transplantation.

Roll's research interests include cell therapy and organ regeneration, NMLP, HPV infection in transplant recipients and clinical outcomes. He is the primary investigator in a clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine in reducing the risk of cervical cancer in transplant recipients on immune suppression drugs.

He is an assistant professor of clinical surgery at UCSF.
