He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Northwestern University, in addition to a master's degree in health care quality and patient safety. He also completed a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at UCSF.

Liu is interested in quality improvement and patient safety, particularly in using electronic medical records to streamline care pathways and to improve arrhythmia care outcomes for vulnerable populations. He is also interested in deepening our understanding of the causes of sudden cardiac death and identifying preventable risk factors.

Outside of work, Liu is very active and likes to rock climb, run and bike. He also loves cooking, music and improv comedy.
