Elisabeth Askin

MD

Internist
Mom and author

Dr. Elisabeth Askin is a specialist in internal medicine who is particularly interested in managing chronic disease and the medications prescribed for them. Her favorite question to ask new patients is what brings them joy, which she believes should never get lost among questions about symptoms, habits and health history. She enjoys learning about hobbies, travels and other pleasures through these conversations.

Askin grew up in Texas, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and then held a variety of jobs – including magazine intern, coffee shop barista and contraception researcher – before going to medical school. She earned her medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed a residency in internal medicine at UCSF. While in school, she co-wrote a reference book for medical professionals, students and patients called The Health Care Handbook: A Clear and Concise Guide to the United States Health Care System.

Askin belongs to the Society of General Internal Medicine.

When she isn't working, she enjoys spending time with her two children, reading novels and cycling.

    About our process

Her knowledge and expertise is clear and her care and concern as well. She listens carefully to my concerns does the needed exam and when she feels I would be best served by a specialist makes a referral and follows up to make sure it happened and provides help if I had any trouble doing so. She is rare in that she understands and does not treat the psychic pain from my depression and anxiety as any less real or important as all other physical discomfort and pain and has consulted a trusted psychiatrist on my behalf for information and refers to newer treatments available tracks my attempts to lessen one of them that gives research proven concerning side effects and recommendations for titration plan when my first attempt was unsuccessful and continues to advocate for me to find a psychiatrist for ongoing care emphasizing that I would receive needed care from a specialist.
