About me
Dr. Kirsten Tolstrup is a noninvasive cardiologist with special interests in echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) and valvular and structural heart disease. To evaluate cardiovascular disease in general and valvular heart disease in particular, she uses specialized echocardiographic techniques – such as transthoracic, transesophageal and three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography, as well as echocardiography performed with supine bicycle stress testing. She serves as the associate chief of cardiology for ambulatory services.
Tolstrup also works closely with the interventional team on catheter-based procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement and MitraClip, a less-invasive option for patients with a leaky mitral valve.
Tolstrup's research focuses on implementing new noninvasive cardiology procedures and developing multidisciplinary team approaches to cardiovascular care.
Tolstrup earned her medical degree at the University of Copenhagen, where she completed training in orthopedic surgery and trauma medicine. She also completed a residency in internal medicine at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center and a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Tolstrup is a highly experienced cardiologist . It was my first visit with her. She had reviewed the history of my related tests and reports, answered the questions and concerns I had , thoroughly examined me , and included me in the treat ment plan that she suggested. Rather than rushing to set of CT scans she set a systematic Diognostic plan and based on the results of them the likely appropriate treatment plan. She also set a follow up visit after the first test Is done. Dr. Tolstrup is a genuinely caring provider and was so enough to accommodate me in her very busy work schedule . I am very pleased , and indeed privileged, to be one of her patients. In addition to Dr.Tolstrup , I would like to acknowledge and thank her young cardiologist colleague , Dr. Evangelia, who had also made a thorough review of my case, explained patiently and quite understandably the likely cardiac issues that I might have or not, explained different tests as appropriate for different possible outcomes , and provided helpful advices. I am deeply thankful to both Dr. Tolstrup and Dr. Evangelia and look forward to my upcoming tests and the follow up visits.

Both Dr. Tolstrup (and Dr. Miranda) were amazing. The reason I come to UCSF, and this location in particular. So thankful.
