What to expect at your breast cancer screening and prevention appointment
Before your first appointment, one of our experienced nurse navigators contacts you to review your personal and family history of breast cancer, answer questions you may have and discuss any genetic factors that may increase your risk.
At your initial visit, our specialized nurse practitioner reviews previous breast screenings or genetic testing you've had and provides personalized recommendations for future breast cancer screening.
After determining your risk level, we recommend the most appropriate next steps. Your risk-management plan may include:
Genetic counseling or testing, including recommendations for close relatives
Lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise and smoking cessation strategies
More frequent screenings, which may include mammography and breast MRI
Consultation with a medical oncologist or breast surgeon to discuss preventive treatments, such as chemotherapy or breast surgery
Who can benefit from a breast cancer risk assessment?
We recommend a personalized breast cancer risk assessment for anyone with:
Family history of breast or ovarian cancer, particularly in first-degree relatives (parents or siblings)
Personal history of breast cancer or benign (noncancerous) breast conditions, such as fibrocystic breasts
Inherited genetic changes, including BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations
Inherited genetic syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome or Cowden syndrome
