Interstitial lung disease program services

ILD is a group of conditions causing lung inflammation and scarring. Your lungs do not get enough oxygen so you may feel short of breath and cough a lot. Managing your symptoms can help you breathe easier and feel your best.

ILD care team

UCSF Health's ILD team includes experts in the field. You get specialized, collaborative care from:

  • Pulmonologists

  • Interventional pulmonologists

  • Thoracic radiologists (lung imaging specialists)

  • Lung pathologists specializing in ILDs

  • Rheumatologists (autoimmune disease specialists)

  • Thoracic and transplant surgeons

  • Palliative care specialists

ILD diagnosis and treatments

We offer:

  • Precise diagnostics. We use leading technology to view images of your lungs and help us understand how well they are functioning.

  • Effective medications. Our ILD specialists work to find safe, effective drugs that improve or slow lung function decline.

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation. Pulmonary rehabilitation for ILD helps patients manage symptoms and improve lung function.

  • Education, support and counseling. At our support groups and seminars, UCSF Health experts provide support and the latest information about ILD, including inherited forms of the condition.

  • Clinical trials. You can participate in the testing of new therapies before they are widely available and help improve ILD care alongside leading researchers.

  • Seamless transplant care. We may recommend a lung transplant evaluation when other treatments aren't working. We partner with the UCSF Health Lung Transplant Program, providing integrated, timely care.
