Gastroenterology at Mount Zion
UCSF Gastroenterology at Mount Zion specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating conditions involving the digestive system, including diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas.
Our state-of-the art care includes screening procedures, such as endoscopy and colonoscopy, as well as advanced imaging and therapeutic procedures, including intestinal ultrasound, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and therapeutic endoscopy. We have programs dedicated to patients with specific conditions, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease (the main types of inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD), gastrointestinal motility disorders, celiac disease and hereditary gastrointestinal cancer syndromes.
Our team is also dedicated to research that will lead to a better understanding of various digestive disorders as well as new therapies. Many of our patients participate in clinical trials evaluating promising investigational treatments for ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, eosinophilic esophagitis and other conditions.

Special programs
- Adult Celiac Disease Program
The UCSF Celiac Disease Program cares for patients with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that disrupts digestion in the small intestine. Our experts also diagnose and manage other small intestine conditions, and they collaborate with a variety of specialists on addressing disorders and symptoms that may be related to celiac disease, such as thyroid disease; neuropathy; headaches; and certain liver, joint or skin problems. We work with providers in our Pediatric Celiac Disease Program to help patients of all ages and their families navigate testing and treatment.
- Colitis and Crohn's Disease Center
The UCSF Colitis and Crohn's Disease Center provides comprehensive care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), whether they have Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis or an IBD-related illness. Our experts are dedicated to patient care, education for both doctors and patients, and research to find a cure. Advances in our understanding of IBD are rapidly increasing treatment options, and UCSF is at the forefront of research into new therapies that could improve outcomes. Our team of experts – which includes gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, immunologists, nutritionists, nurses and social workers – meets regularly to discuss cases and the latest advances. The team designs treatment plans that incorporate the needs and preferences of individual patients, with the goal of improving quality of life and overall health.
- Adult Motility Program
The UCSF Adult Motility Program cares for patients with conditions that hinder the movement of food through the digestive system, including esophageal motility disorders, lower gastrointestinal motility disorders, and gastroparesis. We provide a wide array of diagnostic tests for these conditions including esophageal manometry, pH/impedance catheter testing, BRAVO esophageal pH testing, EndoFLIP and a range of tests for pelvic floor dysfunction. Our experts work closely with specialists in advanced endoscopy, surgery, radiology, and pelvic floor physical therapy, including biofeedback, to ensure comprehensive treatment for these complex disorders.
- Lynch Syndrome Center and Familial/Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention Program
The Familial/Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Prevention Program is dedicated to caring for patients with an inherited risk for digestive system cancers, providing diagnostic services, management and support for individuals and families affected by Lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis and similar conditions. Housed within the clinic is our dedicated Lynch Syndrome Center. To address the full spectrum of medical needs related to these disorders, we work closely with specialists in colorectal surgery, oncology, gynecology, urology, dermatology, hereditary cancers and nutrition. By integrating advanced diagnostic tools, a proactive yet compassionate treatment approach, and findings from cutting-edge research, we foster an environment that empowers patients to take control of their long-term health.
- Advanced Endoscopy Program
Our UCSF Advanced Endoscopy Program features a team of therapeutic endoscopy experts who are dedicated to caring for patients with cancerous and noncancerous diseases of the pancreas, bile ducts, esophagus, stomach, colon and small intestine. Because our state-of-the-art evaluations and treatments are minimally invasive, patients recover more quickly and experience less discomfort than they would with conventional surgery. We also offer weight-loss options using endoscopic techniques. Our team works with surgeons, interventional radiologists and general gastroenterologists to ensure all patients receive the best possible care.
