California's first neuropsychiatric institute – founded in 1941 and now called UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital – has been a leader in the field throughout its long history. We offer comprehensive, compassionate care for adults with emotional, psychological and cognitive problems. Our services include consultations, evaluations and treatments provided during hospital stays or on an intensive outpatient basis.

Our faculty and staff are deeply committed to patient care and support for the mental health of people in the Bay Area and Northern California throughout their lives. We are recognized for our dedication to improving and expanding mental health care, cutting-edge research, training the next generation of leaders, advancing public policy on mental health, and promoting diversity in the field.

Clinical services

We create a personalized treatment plan for every patient evaluated at our hospital. Our programs include:

  • Inpatient Program. Our acute psychiatric service treats adults with severe behavioral and emotional disturbances. We take a "biopsychosocial" approach, which considers the biological, psychological and social influences on each patient. Our 30-bed unit is in use 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy Program. Treatment with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may help patients with certain behavioral and emotional disturbances, including some forms of depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program and Intensive Outpatient Program. These programs offer support, safety and treatment for patients with mood disorders, personality disorders, and other severe or persistent mental illnesses. Our care team includes many kinds of specialists, from psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses to clinical social workers and rehabilitation therapists.
