Dr. Ann Poncelet is a neurologist who specializes in caring for patients with autoimmune neuromuscular disorders, such as brachial neuritis, neuromuscular junction disorders, inflammatory myopathies and neuropathies. She serves as director of the UCSF Brachial Neuritis Center, which provides multidisciplinary care for this disorder affecting nerves around the shoulder and arm.

Poncelet has a special research interest in medical education, particularly in how relationships that span several years impact patients, learners and faculty.

Poncelet earned her medical degree at UCSF. She completed a residency in neurology at Stanford Health Care, followed by a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in electromyography, a method of evaluating muscle and nerve health by recording muscles' electrical activity.

Poncelet is director of the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators and is known internationally for her work in longitudinal integrated clerkships, a model of clinical education where third-year medical students work longitudinally with faculty supervisors and patients over the core clinical training year.

    About our process

We feel extremely lucky to have been able to establish care with Dr. Poncelet - she is thorough, careful, thoughtful, generous with her time, extremely personable and caring, it goes without saying an expert in the field, and has given us hope. Telehealth offers us the ability to see her even though we live far away, something that would have been impossible just a few years ago. It's run very well. Thank you!

Dr Poncelet is a real gem. It is obvious that she cares. I could not ask for a better partner in my care, especially when dealing with such a challenging condition that does not have a lot of data or answers.

Dr. Poncelet is such an outstanding physician, clinician, researcher, and educator. As the patient, it is rare to appreciate that range of skills in a office visit. However, with Dr. Poncelet it is consistently clear that she is up-to-date on the latest evidence and she has even founded a brachial neuritis clinic that provides evidence based treatment and is also conducting research. I appreciated how she let me know of the opportunities to participate in research without making me feel any pressure or expectation to make a certain decision. Her ability to share information with me clearly captures her talent as an educator and her approach to sharing this information also was done in a way that I am more likely to follow through with the recommendations (e.g., using motivational interviewing techniques). I am so grateful that she is part of my treatment team.
