Cathy Sun

Ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist

Dr. Cathy Sun is an ophthalmologist who specializes in caring for adults with glaucoma. She performs a variety of laser procedures and surgeries, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, glaucoma filtering surgery and cataract surgery.

Sun's research focuses on using electronic health records and clinical trials to improve diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and other chronic eye disorders. She has received research funding from the American Glaucoma Society and is currently supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Sun earned her medical degree and completed a residency in ophthalmology at UCSF. She completed a fellowship in glaucoma at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. She received a merit award fellowship from the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation.

Sun is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and American Glaucoma Society. In her free time, she enjoys running, gardening and exploring the outdoors.

    I appreciate the explanations I received about my eyes. I always have my eyes checked every year so I was concerned about why I had not been told I had a problem. I accept the explanation I received. I currently live 50 miles away but I was determined to keep the appointment to check my eyes

    Most skillful, conscientious, and thoughtful ophthalmologist I've seen in years. Performed a delicate surgery successfully and explained in advance what she was doing to increase likelihood of success; over the last 2-1/2 years has followed up carefully and made sure I was able to get appointments when needed and adjusted meds as needed when I called on phone.

    Generally, UCSF's ophthalmology has been somewhat disappointing over the years, but Dr. Sun has been a plus.

    Again, my visit with Dr. Sun was very good. She informed me of everything that she was doing, and made recommendations that will be beneficial to my eye care. Very happy to have her as my doc.

    Dr. Sun is relatively new to me, and thus far, she has been a positive provider. I came to UC Ophthalmology several years ago and have had several change of doctors, change not of my choice. I hope for a more stable environment.

    Dr Sun has excellent skills in listening to the patient, providing explanations of conditions and treatment options, and offering options in a collaborative manner. She has good attention to detail while also providing a thoughtful and pragmatic general understanding of a situation-great judgement.
