Dr. Maria Dall'Era is a rheumatologist who directs both the UCSF Lupus Clinic and the clinical trials center of the UCSF Department of Medicine.

In addition to caring for patients, Dall'Era has a special research interest in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She participates in clinical trials of potential new treatments for generalized lupus and lupus nephritis, kidney inflammation caused by lupus. Through her research, she hopes to develop advanced therapies for patients suffering from SLE.

Dall'Era earned her medical degree at UCSF, where she also completed her internal medicine residency, serving as chief resident, and a fellowship in rheumatology.

    An appointment with Dr. Dall'era is always enlightening. I feel secure in her ability to help me maintain my health and at 83, that's becoming increasingly important. She actually reviews my records and pays attention to my individual health issues, asking appropriate questions and offering suggestions that might improve my health. The care I get from her seems far more individualized than what I get from others to whom I feel I'm simply "Patient 165" and a bunch of statistics.

    In my estimation, there's none better than Dr. Dall'era. She's extraordinary, always on top of everything medical that's happening with me-unlike even my primary. She listens intently and with compassion, she explains everything clearly and concisely, in short, there is none better.
