Why choose UCSF Health for rheumatology care?

Rheumatic conditions can significantly affect your health and quality of life in many ways. At UCSF Health, we understand that treating these complex diseases requires the expertise of many specialists. Our board-certified rheumatologists collaborate with experts in nephrology, pulmonology, dermatology, cardiology, ophthalmology and neurology to manage every aspect of your care.

Our rheumatology specialties

Throughout the region, people with challenging autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including those with undiagnosed and unexplained symptoms, turn to our rheumatologists to get an expert evaluation and advanced treatment. Our team also cares for people with rheumatic diseases complicated by other health conditions such as cancer or heart disease.

We leverage the latest techniques to monitor rheumatic conditions and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Musculoskeletal radiologists use advanced imaging to examine joint and soft tissue inflammation. Interventional radiologists perform minimally invasive procedures to detect lung problems, gastrointestinal bleeding or other issues that could be related to rheumatic diseases.

Our areas of expertise include:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis. We draw on many treatments to address this spinal inflammatory disease, including medication, physical therapy and surgery.

  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD). A skilled team provides comprehensive care for all types of ILD. We help patients manage symptoms, prevent permanent lung damage and live a better quality of life.

  • Lupus. Our lupus specialists help you manage all aspects of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), including kidney, skin and nervous system issues.

  • Myositis. Rheumatologists, neurologists and other providers specialize in inflammatory neuromuscular disorders, such as dermatomyositis and antisynthetase syndrome.

  • Psoriatic arthritis. We offer the latest evidence-based medications to help people manage psoriatic arthritis, including antirheumatic drugs and biologics.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Rheumatologists, plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons work together to ease joint pain and slow disease progression.

  • Scleroderma. We offer whole-person scleroderma care to help you manage symptoms affecting your skin, joints, gastrointestinal tract and other organ systems.

  • Vasculitis. A multispecialty team cares for all forms of vasculitis (blood vessel inflammation). We offer the latest medications to help you manage symptoms, and we participate in vasculitis research and clinical trials.
