Care provider promised a referral but so far I haven't heard about one ...

Dr. Waul took the time to conduct a full body scan with care. We had a real conversation about my dermatological health.

My regular dermatologist referred me to UCSF. I was pleased to receive an appointment with Dr. Michael A. Waul who was very kind and took time to examine and explain my condition and then to prescribe treatment medications. I would have no hesitation in recommending both Dr. Waul and UCSF Dermatology Clinic.

Superb experience.

Listened to me believed the history I gave him and genuinely collaborated with me on decisions like whether to biopsy and choosing biopsy sites. He also consulted with another provider on the biopsy decision which I also appreciated (I'm so grateful for humility in doctors). Also gave me detailed explanations at a prior visit of why he originally thought my facial rash was most likely rosacea e.g. inclusion of the nasolabial folds and the periods of disappearance that helped me recognize later as I later developed daily fevers and the rash became permanent and started sparing the nasolabial folds during the fevers that it might not be rosacea after all and that I should come back for follow-up and more evaluation. The biopsy results are still outstanding but he might be the one who diagnoses the whole systemic disease. Smart collaborative kind detailed. And he did a nice job on the biopsy stitches. Pay him more.

He is very skillfull at doing biopsies so there is no pain at the time or after the appointment.

Dr. Waul is wonderful! I am so thankful I found him. He is kind and really listened to me. He also spent a lot of time with me. He was not rushed. He included my concerns into our decision making process on treatment for my skin.

Dr Waul very excellent on his doctor-to-patient interactions.

I was seeing a dermatologist in Berkeley and he had left the practice. I was overdue for a check-up and since I am an Ovarian Breast cancer survivor my bar is somewhat higher for cancerous lesion surveillance. I have also had Basal cell and Squamous cell skin cancer removed. My PC in Berkeley was concerned about a couple of places on my back and suggested that I see a dermo ASAP. Berkeley was booked out to December so I asked for other options. I was referred to Dr. Waul. I am always a bit anxious seeing a new Doctor but he was so kind and such a good communicator and obviously very knowledgeable. I had to have 2 biopsies and he was very skilled with the numbing and the stitching. I did not feel any pain. My back is healing nicely and my husband reports that the stitches are neat and looking great. I am returning in 6 months for my regular check and plan to use Dr. Waul as my new dermo. He is a lovely person and was able to reassure me and attend to my needs. He is a really good listener which as far as I am concerned is one of the most important skills that a good Doctor can have.

Due to requirement of highly specialized skin cancer knowledge/experience I felt my care was only "adequate generic dermatology." Which Is less than what I expect/need

I went home and suggested my wife ask Dr. Waul to be her dermatologist.

His recommendations were appropriate and solved the problems. He has a good friendly communication style with the patient too.

He involved me in choosing the preventative treatment and where to start it.

Patient and listens. That's a pretty good start. A bit dismissive on a few concerns. But he wanted to focus on two main points. But had many issues because it's been so long since I've been able to visit a dermatologist

Dr Waul is exceptionally kind considerate respectful and patient (even with my ignorant questions!). He also administers treatments (liquid nitrogen sprays and excisions for biopsies) very carefully and gently.

I was taken to my room very quickly and on time. My routine skin check up however seemed to be the least thorough that I have ever had and was extremely quick. As far as the two concerns I had one was discussed well. The other I was not provided with much information regarding the cream tx or potential alternatives if that cream was not covered by insurance. Furthermore the MD was very kind about checking in but it took almost 45 minutes to provide me with an estimate cost for a skin lesion biopsy.

I liked Dr. Waul a lot .

Provider was in a rush and I was only seen for 12 minutes. I still have not received prior authorization clearance for a medication he wrote.

Dr. Waul could have listened a little bit more he seemed a bit in a hurry. Overall he's an excellent doctor

Two weeks later - still waiting for biopsy lab results. Called and left message 3 days ago. Still no response.

I was pleasantly surprised today when the Dermatology clinic called me. Dr Waul wanted to schedule a 6 month follow up appointment. In the 20 years I have been seen at this clinic this is the first time this has happened. Perhaps it is a new service? It is a very helpful service. Thank you Dr. Waul.

Im not sure. It seemed maybe he was uncomfortable treating me. Because on my chin and no mask(Covid concerns). He gave the reason of someone else treating due to I guess his inexperience. Since he did not want to do a skin check either I feel he may have been uncomfortable for some reason. He Was very pleasant and I followed his lead and just agreed to his recommendation that a female specialist (more experienced?) do the work. As I hadn't necessarily expected any "surgery" be done at this visit I didn't see any imposition - but then the notes from my primary told what my appointment was for so why wasn't I scheduled appropriately?

I felt like I was being rushed through without any real attention good questions or care about my opinions and comments. They didn't know much about my condition and then concluded it must be mental health or in my head which they didn't treat and I should go elsewhere. Many studies show there is a link between my condition and mental health (the condition being the cause). There are multiple closely related studies showing a link between my condition insomnia and resulting mental health issues. They did not listen to that they did not know about that and haven't heard or seen such a thing therefore it must not exist. There was little to no discussion about treating my condition only asking If I would like to try something they could prescribe and didn't tell me anything about that medication. I felt very dismissed and they wanted to get on to the next patient. I have been seeing mental health doctors for months now and they tell me go see a dermatologist. I felt very depressed after this visit I don't know what to do because no one wants to help.
