Dr. D. Nyasha Chagwedera is a psychiatrist who cares for patients with both mental and metabolic disorders.

In her research, Chagwedera investigates causes of cardiovascular and metabolic disease in patients with psychiatric illnesses. As heart disease is the leading cause of death in people with serious mental illness, her studies are dedicated to learning why and how this could be prevented.

Chagwedera earned her bachelor's degree in human developmental and stem cell biology at Harvard College. At UCSF, she completed her medical degree, a doctorate in biomedical sciences and immunology, and a residency in adult psychiatry, serving as chief resident. She received the resident medical student teaching award from UCSF and an award for outstanding resident research from the National Institute of Mental Health.
