Dr. Saras Ramanathan is an ophthalmologist who provides comprehensive ocular care. She specializes in surgery for cataracts, particularly complex cases. She is passionate about her goal of restoring and preserving sight in each and every patient.

Ramanathan is equally passionate about teaching what she knows to other physicians. She is a nationally recognized medical educator. Her publications on methods of teaching cataract surgery as well as on training with surgical simulation have influenced the way surgical ophthalmology is taught in the U.S. today. She directs UCSF's residency program in ophthalmology, and she continually strives for excellence in resident education. She has received numerous teaching awards and feels further rewarded by her former students' success and achievements.

Ramanathan earned her medical degree from the University of Washington. She then completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Chicago.

Ramanathan is a fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

    I was in a lot of discomfort this visit with my eyes and had many issues going on with my health that could be causing my vision problems and I knew the doctor could give me a diagnosis that could answer my concerns and she did.

    I was originally seen in the Parnassus ER by a member of this practice and she referred me to this practice for follow-up. I was very pleased both by the ER treatment and the follow-up. Both physicians were excellent in their attention to details in my treatment and in their caring attitudes.

    I had no problem with the care provider shes not the one that schedules the appointments. I am selfishly saying I wont recommend the care provider because I dont want to make it more difficult to get an appointment. RE care providers care yes I would recommend provider.

    There was a lot of examination of my eyes but very little explanation and no new Rx for glasses the diagnosis of glaucoma was in my after visit notes but no one mentioned it at the visit or how bad it is.

    Dr. Ramanathan seems fine but due to having to reschedule the visit felt rushed. I told her assistant (resident?) and her that I needed to have the cancelled surgery asap due to changing insurance at my impending retirement date but that wasn't discussed and when I was called later the dates were not feasible -- the last surgery is 2 days before my insurance changes. I felt there could be more consideration of my concerns about the type of lens for the surgery-- I was confused when she told me the prescription was worse than she felt comfortable with -- but the meeting was over so I didn't understand what that meant in terms of my own eyesight. Generally it felt rushed -- and after waiting over 2 hours I was a bit stressed.
