Dr. Rowen is an obstetrician and gynecologist whose care and research focuses on sexual health and transgender health, as well as complex gynecologic care for people with cancer. A lead gynecologic surgeon at UCSF, Rowen has expertise in laparoscopy (surgical diagnostic procedure to examine the inside of the abdomen) and vaginal and vulvar surgery, including especially hysterectomy. She is medical director of perioperative services for the obstetrics and gynecology department.

Rowen earned her medical degree and a master's degree in health and medical sciences through a joint program of the University of California, Berkeley and UCSF. She completed a residency in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at UCSF.

Rowen is an international expert in sexual health. She has served as a board member for the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health and as an associate editor for the Journal of Sexual Medicine. She is a sought-after speaker on sexual medicine and has published dozens of papers and book chapters on the topics of sexual health and family planning and safe motherhood in developing countries. She is a member of the International Society for Sexual Medicine and American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

    Do not recall information about follow up or after care. Before leaving I was able to ask the nurse about what bleeding to expect. I am very grateful to the doctor for her expertise. The procedure was much less uncomfortable than anticipated, clearly helped by the doctor's skill, experience, and attention to several things she did to make it more comfortable. I believe that the technical skill of this provider is top notch, world class, and am very grateful.

    This experience should be used as the model of care for transgender individuals. Dr Rowen was highly personable, skilled at providing an approach to care that was inclusive and non-gendered in a natural and easy way, patient, answered all questions thoroughly, and frequently checked on what my expectations or desires for care were. From a personal perspective, it is a tall hurdle to make a gynecological appointment for a trans man one of the most pleasant doctor appointments, but Dr Rowen has achieved that.

    Dr. Rowen is the best. It is rare for a doctor to be this skilled and also so compassionate, patient, and kind. I am a complex case, and over the last decade it has felt like I was in a video game - reaching different boss levels to find a doctor that could understand what was happening. With Rowen I've finally reached the top level - she has figured out multiple pieces of the puzzle and it's been life changing for me.

    She is a leading expert in her field and has the best bedside manner. I felt completely comfortable consulting her about an awkward condition. She listened and validated my concerns, informed me about my options and associated possible outcomes and risks, and supported my final decision, letting me know that if I changed my mind in the future, I would be welcome to return. I felt empowered and relieved when I left.

    The doctor was fantastic. She walked me through everything, set expectations, allowed me to decide if I wanted an additional numbing shot and walked me through the pros/cons of accepting it. She was friendly, put me at easy, quick, and the whole experience was very easy. Couldn't have been more impressed by her care, professionalism, and bedside manner.

    Dr. Rowen went above and beyond to care for me. She provided me with the knowledge that helped me understand my condition and the risks and benefits of each care option. After doing extensive research, I had many questions. Dr. Rowen patiently answered all of them and helped me make sense of the information. She was friendly, professional, energetic, and fun.
