UCSF Health Ranks #1 in California and Among the Nation's Best

No. 1 Adult Hospital in California (tied) and Among Top 10 Nationwide in 10 Specialty Areas, According to U.S. News & World Report

UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center has been named to the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll for adult care for the 30th consecutive year, reflecting excellence across a broad range of specialties, procedures and conditions.

UCSF Medical Center remained tied as the highest-ranked hospital in California and was ranked the best hospital in the San Francisco metropolitan area. The Honor Roll recognizes hospitals that demonstrate excellence across a wide range of clinical specialties and consistently deliver outstanding care for patients with medical conditions ranging from common to the most complex.

The 2026-2027 U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings evaluated 4,494 hospitals nationwide, with 178 hospitals earning a national ranking in at least one specialty.

UCSF Medical Center was ranked the best hospital nationwide for pulmonology and lung surgery, along with geriatrics. It was among the nation's top 10 hospitals in 10 specialties, more than any other hospital in California, including cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, rheumatology, and urology.

In California, UCSF Medical Center ranked No. 1 in six specialties: neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, rheumatology, urology, geriatrics, and diabetes and endocrinology. U.S. News introduced new regional specialty rankings this year in four areas, in which UCSF Medical Center was the best in the San Francisco metropolitan area for cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; and orthopedics.

"This recognition reflects what makes UCSF unique: the close integration of scientific discovery, education and patient care," said UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MBBS. "Every day, our researchers, clinicians, learners and staff work across disciplines to translate new knowledge into better care for patients. That's what drives us, and it's gratifying to see those efforts recognized in these results."

The rankings also reflect the strength of UCSF's multidisciplinary institutes and centers, where experts from different specialties work together to accelerate discovery and improve patient care. Among them is the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, which brings together leaders in neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and related disciplines to advance research and deliver comprehensive care for diseases of the brain and nervous system.

This year's assessment included significant methodology changes that placed greater emphasis on patient outcomes and expanded measures of outpatient care. With these new metrics, UCSF Medical Center continued to perform at the highest levels across a broad range of specialties and procedures. UCSF Health's community hospitals — UCSF Health Stanyan Hospital and UCSF Health Hyde Hospital — were not included in the ranking. Overall, nine of UCSF Medical Center's evaluated specialties maintained or improved their performance from the previous year.

The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings evaluate hospitals based on patient outcomes, patient experiences, the quality of nursing and other measures of performance across adult specialties, procedures and conditions.
