Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of lung conditions that interfere with normal breathing, including emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. These diseases cause a chronic, permanent and typically progressive obstruction of airflow in the lungs.

At UCSF, COPD experts specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. In addition to caring for patients, we are at the forefront of basic and clinical research with the goal of better understanding the causes of COPD, as well as improving current treatments and developing new therapies.
