The UCSF Liver Tumor Clinic specializes in caring for patients with early- and intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer, as well as other benign and cancerous liver tumors. Patients with advanced liver cancer are treated at UCSF's Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology Clinic.

Our world-renowned team consists of hepatologists, or liver specialists, as well as surgeons and interventional radiologists, specialists who use medical imaging techniques to perform minimally invasive procedures. All team members have expertise in treating liver cancer. In fact, our team has driven many innovations in liver cancer care, including advances that have improved outcomes and made more patients eligible for liver transplants.

When needed, patients are seen by all three types of specialists in one convenient visit, sparing patients who live far away from making multiple trips to San Francisco to get the care they need.

We offer a range of treatment options. These include surgery to remove the tumor, often using minimally invasive methods that lower the risk of postsurgical complications and lead to faster recoveries; liver transplantation (through the Liver Transplant Program, known for its ability to handle the most complex cases and for its large living donor program); and interventional radiology procedures, in which the doctor uses a variety of technologies to deliver treatments to the tumor, either directly or via its blood supply. Interventional radiology treatments can shrink or destroy tumors without causing significant damage to the liver.

UCSF Health also offers many support services, from exercise counseling to meditation classes, designed to bolster patients' well-being during treatment and beyond.
